Scanning

We are equipped with two state of the art reproductive scanners and can perform efficient and accurate scanning of both beef and dairy herds. To carry this out, a safe and efficient handling system such as a crush with a chase is needed.

Fertility testing

Wensum Valley Vets are well equipped to carry out both bull and ram fertility testing, as we know this can be a source of great stress. We can collect semen on farm and analyze the sperm, and advise on the best course of action, if needed. We also carry out ram vasectomy surgeries at our clinic, where patients benefit from a skilled team of handlers and surgeon.

Medicines

Our well stocked pharmacy, based at the clinic in Hempton, allows us to provide a vast range of competitively medicines when needed. Our vets can authourise medication for use on farm, teach methods for administration and ensure you are well stocked in the lead up to busy periods, such as lambing time.

Training and courses

Throughout the year we run several courses including a Medicines Handling Course and Lambing Basics Talk, which we host in the conference room at our clinic in Hempton, we can repeat these on request or are happy to provide training and talks on topics of your choosing. Please call us if you would like to arrange a session.

Herd Health

Herd Health planning is an essential part of many assurance schemes, but also a useful tool for any farm, providing veterinary input on preventative medicine, infectious disease protocols and a chance to discuss testing regimes. We offer herd health planning to everyone from large commercial units to small holder flocks and alpaca herds. Planning ahead in a herd health plan helps reduce the risk of disease outbreaks and improve the welfare and productivity of farm animals.

Testing and infectious disease management

We can carry out routine and investigative testing for infectious diseases such as BVD, Johnes and TB. We also carry out postmortem examination and testing where needed and liaise closely with specialist pathologists and laboratories across the country during investigations.

Emergencies

It goes without saying, you don’t want to need to use us out of hours, however you can rest assured that if you do need us, we will be there for you.

All 5 of our vets take part in providing out of hour cover 24/7, 365 days a year meaning that if you do need a vet, it will be a familiar face in a time of crisis. Having a team of 5 vets ensures that someone can be available quickly to help yourself and your animal at a stressful time.

Out of hours calls can vary greatly, from assisting the Fire Service with animal rescues, to lambing, calving or a down cow. If you have concerns that you may need a vet out of hours, give us a call and we can discuss the problem with you.

Small holders

Our vets all enjoy working with small holders so provide urgent and preventative veterinary care. Poppy and Lauren have both received specialist training on the treatment of Alpacas and Llamas, and Tim has his own small holding, including sheep, goats, pigs and chickens. At the clinic we are experienced in goat kid disbudding, under general anaesthesia and can perform in house worm egg counts to keep your small holding healthy.

Game birds and Poultry

We are happy to assess prescribe worming treatments to game birds and provide advise on preventative and treatment measures. We can also carry out fresh postmortem examination and testing at our clinic.

The team at Wensum Valley Vets are always keen to treat chickens, we understand that they are often beloved pets and both Poppy and Lauren, have interest in chicken medicine. We are also happy to advise on problems with chicken parasites, such as mites.
